Model Aircraft have been flown in the Port Lincoln Area for many years.
The Port Lincoln Model Flying Group was officially formed in 1975 by twelve aero-model devotees. The Club leased land opposite the Louth Bay turn off where flying was conducted on Saturdays at 2pm. A number of members were flying control line models, which can only fly in circles, controlled by the pilot at the other end of two strong wires. In the late seventies a relatively new technology, Radio Control, became affordable enough to use recreationally in the guidance of our models. This was a huge step forward, enabling the hobby to be taken to new ‘heights’ with the freedom of flying without a physical connection to the aircraft.

The PLMFG peaked in 1980 with 32 members. During this period the club was active on a number of fronts. Upon invitation, the club took part in flying displays at the Arno Bay new years day festivities for a number of years, as well as the opening of the Streaky Bay Airstrip. Inter-club events were also conducted with our Whyalla Model Club counterparts.

Gliding was another facet many members were interested in, particularly Slope Soaring. This was, and continues to be, conducted on three slopes in the Lower EP including Quartz Hill, Koppio Hill and Winters Hill.

The loss due to sale of the Louth Bay site in the Mid 80’s seen the club move to several locations including Norm Growden’s airstrip near Koppio, Kingsley McDonald’s near the Tod Reservoir, Theo Modra’s airstrip at Greenpatch and a small paddock near the Coomunga Water Tower.

The lack of a permanent home within a convenient distance of Port Lincoln took its toll on membership numbers, leading to the PLMFG ceasing operation in 1995 and donating remaining funds the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

In early 2001 about 10 model aircraft enthusiasts, some from the previous club along with a number of new faces, decided the time had come to resurrect a model aircraft club in Port Lincoln.
Contact was made with the Model Aero-Sport Association of SA which commenced the formation of the new club. MASA is the State body involved in the administration of the sport and importantly, through the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia (MAAA), provides insurance for members.

The Newly formed entity was the Port Lincoln Model Aerosport Club.

By mid 2001 members were fortunate enough to be given permission to fly on a section of property owned by Ralph and Jennifer Watkins at Coomunga. A continued good association with Ralph and Jennifer sees the club still flying from this location today.

The club presently has about 20 members who build and fly a variety of aircraft, ranging in size from 500mm wingspan right through to over 4 metres. Any given Saturday can see a plethora of models from fast aerobatic types, to gliders, helicopters and jets. They are powered by a variety of engines from electric, 6cc methanol fuelled, through to 120cc twin cylinder spark ignition using unleaded fuel, turning propellers over 26” in diameter. These larger models can weigh in excess of 15 kilograms.

Recent Club achievements have been taking part in both of the Cummins full size Air Shows, and conducting successful Annual displays of our own since 2011.

The Club is presently located approximately 16klms west of Port Lincoln on the highway to Coffin Bay. The entrance gate is on the left about 1km past West Coast Funerals. (If you reach the Coomunga rail crossing on the highway you have gone too far!) Follow the signs and clearly defined track through two gates and over the railway line to our visitors parking area.

Our normal flying day is Saturday commencing around 10am all year round. (weather permitting) A number of members also fly on Sundays as well. Every second Saturday sees a BBQ conducted for a nominal cost.
